Counselling placements

CISS provides volunteer trainee counselling placements for students undertaking recognised diploma/degree and masters courses in counselling. Combined counselling degree courses such as “Counselling and Psychology ” do not enable students to offer counselling 1:1 and therefore would not be accepted for a placement.

CISS is an organisational member of the BACP and all our counsellors are expected to work in accordance with the BACP Code of Ethics and Practice. CISS covers the Counties of Swansea and Neath and Port Talbot. We see clients 1:1 by appointment in our Swansea centre, Mon to Fri , Baglan Resource Centre Mon and Tues and Dyfed Road Neath surgery Wed and Thurs.

Group Supervision is provided monthly in the Swansea centre. There is a maximum of 4 supervisees in each group over a 2 hour period. This equates to 1 hour towards the BACP requirements. Trainees will therefore have to arrange their own 1:1 supervision externally, to make up the required hours at their own expense.

Applications for a trainee counselling placement can be made by email (help@cancersupport.wales) or telephone (01792 655025). The applicant should be approaching or have “Readiness to Practice” from their training course establishments. Acceptance will be dependent on an interview, references and DBS outcomes. On acceptance an Induction training will be given prior to seeing clients. Applicants should have their own transport and be able to attend Swansea centre and both of the venues in Neath Port Talbot to see clients. Clients are seen fortnightly, so building up to a maximum of 6 clients is expected i.e. 3 per week. Travel expenses paid monthly for any travel carried out on behalf of CISS.

CISS provides ongoing support to all our trainees by management and supervision and liaises with training establishments as necessary.
